A Visit to Hort Park

Last Thursday, we accompanied Josh to his school's outing to Hort Park! It's very exciting for us because it's a good chance for us to know how's Josh's behaviour with his other friends. And also to have fun!

PS: These pictures are taken mostly by me using a DSLR! And this camera is really very biased. Every picture you snap, it's really very good. No need much editing and the colours and everything, so much better compared to iPhone cameras.

Station 1: Making a potted plant using a snail shell

Eve, Josh and I on a classroom mat, whereby we are getting ready to make our own potted plants!

Snail shells and Hoya leaf! Didn't know these heart-shaped leaves take many years to grow!

Josh collecting the Hoya leaf plant.

We added the dried moss into the empty shell!

Josh colouring the shell!

A close up of the shells!

Ain't these Hoya leaves beautiful?

Finally it's done!

Station 2: Tour at the exhibits at the entrance of Hort Park

Picture of the four of us! So beautiful background right?

Bottled plants. Ain't they creative?

A terrarium! It's so interesting as it is self-sufficient with water and air.
Margaret, a Horticulturist, is proficient in her knowledge of plants! Learnt so much! This is golden orchid!

Station 3: Out in the Hort Park 'Hot Park'!

Elephant flower! Usually it is mistaken as morning glory.

Josh touching the waxy leaves of the Elephant flower plant.

We all looked at the top of the trees!

Children love to party in sheltered areas!

See how happy everyone is!

They are in their own world...

And when one looks up, everyone looks up!

Group picture, and yes, it's hard to get everyone to look at the camera.

Farmer Josh at the plant nursery.

Banana plants are amazing! Everyday, they will drop a petal, and with that, a new branch of bananas will grow! And also, if we cut the whole branch of banana down, the whole plant dies! It's the truth!

Josh touching the thick skin of the petal of banana flower.

Peanut plants. They are amazing! Their flowers will drop and then, a stem will sprout out, and reach the ground. And it will grow peanuts in the ground! How creative this plant can be!

Josh sharing with his classmate!

The weather's so hot that everyone loves umbrella time.

Free range children running on the lawn. Love it!

Black Chilli! Super hot...

Corn plants can be found in the Hort Park

My fellow colleagues and our children!

Honestly, a garden walk is much more interesting if you have a guide walking with you. And you actually gain so much insight as to what is the particular plant name, and how it grows. I'm coming 30 and I just realized that there are so many facts that are so interesting.

1. There is a Black Chilli plant.
2. Peanut plants have flowers, which will sprout a stem down, and the tip will grow peanuts.
3. Asparagus plants can be grown in Singapore.
4. Banana plants (not a tree) will produce baby plants, and usually people will cut down the mother plant after the banana fruit is harvested.
5. The trunk of the banana plant can be cooked and feed the pigs.
6. Those pots with plants and fishes are self-sustaining. The water plants get nutrients from the fishes' pass motion and the fishes, I have no idea where they get their food.
So much more!!

Despite the weather, Josh enjoyed so much with his fellow friends and he learnt so much via touching of the plants and leaves. It's a joy to see other children are happy too! Really so happy for them.
